Leffaherkkuja

March 22, 2009

Irlannissa näin uudemman Tom Tykwerin elokuvan: The International.

Gourmet Club

March 21, 2009

I’ve been really busy for the last week or so. We are already having our last lectures for the whole spring, before the Easter break and reading weeks. This week I had a friend from Austria over, whom I actually met on my trip to Ireland. I will later upload some pictures and write more about the trip (by the way, Dublin is amazing). This Tuesday I saw one of the best Finnish movies I’ve ever seen: Gourmet Club.

The movie is a about a group of rich and old upperclass men, who meet up every few weeks to dine at a fancy restaurant. Every time one of them brings a mystery ingredient, which the others try to guess. One of the men has lost his money in the stock market and comes up with a surprising mystery ingredient in order to win the money in the bet. The movie was shown at the Nordic Society’s second movie night. I don’t know was it the problems in the communication or what, but this time the audience of the night was made up of almost entirely of Finns. I must say I feel sorry for those other Scandinavian students, who missed out on all the fun.

Thou Shalt Not Litter

March 12, 2009

When you walk the streets of Glasgow, you can never know what will you bump into. People leave anything from broken printers and photocopiers (people seem to do some hard-handed scanning here or something, hmm) to Christmas trees. Yes, Christmas trees. In February.

In general people don’t seem to do as much recycling here as in Finland and the streets do have a bit more litter around. Our landlord takes care of our trash few times a week. Hopefully I won’t start running into my own trash on our street. Haha.

Trip To Stirling

March 11, 2009

I went to Stirling on Saturday 21st of February. I wrote something about the trip in Finnish some time ago.  I went there for a short day trip with two American and three Mexican study abroad students.  We headed out for Stirling early in the morning. Previous night some people had a house party, but luckily we had the sense to leave early enough. Elli on the other hand was just returning from the party as I was leaving for the train station around 8 (time does fly by when you’re having fun) . The train left at nine towards Stirling. The train ride itself was not that long and we were in Stirling around 10:30.

Guide At The National Wallace Monument

Our  first stop was the National Wallace Monument. There was a guide talking about the history of the place. We didn’t stick around to listen to him. Entry to the monument itself was unfortunetaly not free, so we just stayed outside and enjoyed the magnificent sceneries from top of the hill.

The monument is located on top of a hill that overlooks Stirling, definately worth the visit if you go to Stirling. The National Wallace Monument is over 60 meters high.   Even though the guide has some nice swords and stuff in the picture, there are now epic re-enactments of scenes from the Braveheart (Shame!).

Stirling Castle

It got pretty hot walking up the hill, but luckily the walk down and the soft breeze cooled us off fast. After the monument, we headed towards the Stirling Castle. We got a small tour of the castle and did some looking around ourselves. I liked the castle alot, and with the tour it was definately more interesting than the Edinburgh Castle (we didn’t take the free tour there). The castle entrance fee included a walking tour to the Argyll House nearby. If you ever find yourself in Stirling, Argyll House is worth seeing if you like history and architecture. We spent the rest of the day walking around Stirling. We bumped into some other students from Glasgow, who were on a day trip as well (great minds think alike).
