Kiekkoa, Teatteria ja Pari Piirakkaa ja Tuoppia Siinä Sivussa

Yksi ainoita huonoja puolia täällä Glasgowssa olossa on ollut jatkuvat flunssat. Yliopistolle tulee joka vuosi uusia vaihto-oppilaita ympäri maailmaa ja kaikki tuovat mukanaan omat flunssaviruksensa. Itse olen ollut sairaana jo pari kolme kertaa. Viimeisimmän kerran sairastuin Irlannin reissulla, jonka jälkeen pöpö on vaivannut välillä. Vietin vasta pari viikkoa sisätiloissa lepäillen, kun pöpö iski pahemmin. Kävin vain pari kertaa ulkona, kun olo hieman parani. Onneksi luennot ovat jo tältä keväältä ohi. Kirjoittelin kevään ainoan esseen Investigating Cyberspaces -kurssille ja parantelin rauhassa.

Tässä meidän lähellä on Òran Mór -niminen pubi (josta puhuin Ehtoollisoluelle?-pätkässä), jossa on joka viikko teatteria. Esityksen hintaan kuuluu lisänä tuoppi olutta ja piirakka. Sain viimein raahattua itseni sinne katsomaan skottilaista teatteria pari viikkoa sitten ja ei tarvinnut pettyä. Molemmat tähän mennessä näkemäni näytelmät olivat oikein mainioita ja ei tarjoilussakaan ollut mitään vikaa. Kävin katsomassa Jo Cliffordin “An Apple A Day” -nimisen näytelmän ja Jon Atli Jonassonin “Djúpid” (The Deep) -nimisen näytelmän.

Yksi kevään kohokohdista on aina ollut jääkiekon MM-kisat. Naapureilta voi tulla valituksia, kun ratkaisupeleissä alkaa äänentasot kohoamaan. Saa nähdä pitääkö paikalliset ihan hulluna, kun joku jaksaa kiinnostua niinkin oudosta lajista kuin jääkiekko. Ehkä se olisi oikea diagnoosi, kun jaksan vieläkin  toivoa, että Suomi viimein saisi sen toisen kultaisen mitalin.

A Play, a Pie and a Pint

I’ve been having a cold ever since I got back from Ireland and it’s been on and off. I spent almost two weeks locked indoors (excluding a few days when I was better and went out shopping and partying). Luckily we’ve had our last lectures for the spring and I’ve just concentrated on getting healthy and writing my essay for the Investigating Cyberspaces course (What better way to do research than surf the web all day long?).

I finally got around to see some Scottish theatre. There’s a nice dinner theatre just around the corner where we live at Òran Mór (the pub that looks like a church that I talked about earlier in Finnish). The concept is called A Play, a Pie and a Pint. So far I’ve seen two plays: An Apple A Day by Jo Clifford and Djúpid (The Deep) by Jon Atli Jonasson. Both of the plays were really good, and there’s nothing bad to say about the pint and the pie either.  It’s a shame I won’t be able to see the remakes of classics coming ahead this summer (including Shakespeare among others, if  I remember correctly).

One of the things that I always look forward to during the spring is the ice hockey world championship tournament. Again this year I’ll be shouting until my voice is gone and rant about the matches until everybody thinks I’ve gone mad. I hope this will be the year when Finland finally gets that second gold.

Täytin 26 maaliskuun 24s päivä. Sattumalta täällä on vaihdossa myös toinenkin englantia opiskeleva Teemu, jolla oli sama syntymäpäivä kuin minulla. Juhlistimme vanhenemista porukalla pubikierroksella. Sain mukavia syntymäpäivälahjoja (pari kuvaa alempana): muun muassa the Graduate -elokuvan DVD:n ja Clive Barkerin Coldheart Canyon -romaanin.

I turned 26 on March 24th. Coincidentally there was another Teemu from Oulu, who has the same birthday as I do. We went out for a small pub crawl around Glasgow to celebrate getting older. I got some really nice birthday presents (a few pictures below) including the Graduate on DVD and a book called Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker.

Juuri ennen lähtöä Stirlingiin kävelin  Lordi Kelvinin patsaan ohi. Kelvinillä oli päässä uusi mietintämyssy; oiskohan miettinyt liikenneturvallisuutta?

I walked past Lord Kelvin’s statue in Glasgow before going to Stirling some time ago. He had a new thinking cap on; he was probably pondering traffic safety or how honking reduces traffic jams.

Ireland

Ireland: green, leprechauns, Guinness and more green. Oh and a few sheep.

I went to visit Ireland for the first time in my life in the beginning of March. I went to Dublin and Galway with Elli and two American study abroad students, Liane and Caitlin. I already posted some pictures I took in Dublin and Galway earlier.

We left Glasgow on Thursday and we arrived in Dublin at midnight. I was really surprised to see how green Ireland really is, even in March. They don’t call it the Emerald Isle for nothing. We spent the first full day in Dublin following a time table proposal found in a small guidebook we got when we made our hostel reservations. We went through all the major tourist attractions in Dublin: Halfpenny bridge, General Post Office, the Spire, the Temple Bar -pub etc. The main attraction was of course the Guinness Brewery. Unfortunately the girls did not like the taste of Guinness that much.

During our tour of the city we randomly bumped into another group of Erasmus-students on a vacation in Dublin. We were really surprised to find out, that they were also going to Galway on Saturday and even more so when few of them told they would coming to Glasgow in week (actually one of them Geri finally came and stayed a few nights at our place). We talked for awhile agreed to meet in Galway.

We took a bus on Saturday from Dublin to Galway, which is on the west coast of Ireland. I really liked Galway with it’s busy little shopping streets, beautiful sceneries and sights. After touring the town, we took a walk by the seaside at the Claddagh-area (there used to be a small village outside Galway where they made the famous rings named after the place). We had our fish & chips dinner at Mc Donagh’s, which was titled as the home of the fish and chips by the guidebook. The food was actually really good and not that expensive either so it was a really good place to unwind after a day of walking around. After dinner we headed for the King’s Head pub, where we met the group we saw in Dublin. We had a fun night, although a local man clad in a green mankini (made famous by Borat) made me want to cleanse my eyes with some sort of acid. Unfortunately my cold, which had been ailing me for the whole trip, started to get worse also and I coughed the whole evening.

We returned to Dublin on Sunday and went for another round of sightseeing. We went to see the Trinity College among other places. After dinner I went to see a movie and we met again with the girls at a restaraunt/bar. A few of the other group came to meet us again at the  and we stayed there until closing time. After the bar had closed we took a taxi to the airport, where we waited for the early morning flight back to Glasgow. The cold, lack of sleep and the walking had really drained my energy, and when I finally came back home on Monday morning I fell asleep immeadiately and slept like a baby.

Irlanti

Kävin Ellin ja kahden amerikkalaisen vaihtarin Lianen ja Caitlinin kanssa Irlannissa maaliskuun alussa. Lensimme Glasgowsta Dubliniin torstaina illasta. Vietimme perjantain tutustuen Dublinin nähtävyyksiin. Lauantaina matkasimme bussilla länsirannikolle Galwayhin, jossa vietimme yhden yön. Glasgowhun palasimme aikaisin maanantai aamuna vietettyämme pitkän yön Dublinin lentoasemalla.

Laitoinkin jo tuossa vähän aikaa sitten muutamia kuvia Dublinista ja Galwaystä näkyville. Irlanti on kyllä todella kaunis maa, ja koko saari oli hämmentävän vihreä jo maaliskuussa. Kiersimme lähes kaikki normaalit “pakolliset” turistinähtävyydet Dublinissa ja Galwayssä. Apuna toimi hostelleja varatessa saadut oppaat molempiin kaupunkeihin. Perjantaina kiersimme Dublinia esimerkkipäivän ohjeiden mukaisesti ja kävimme katsomassa muun muassa Halfpenny Bridge -sillan, General Post Office -pääpostitoimiston ja the Temple Bar -pubin ja totta kai Guinnessin vanhat tehtaat. Mukana tehtailla meillä oli itseasiassa yksi irlantilainen tuttumme jo Glasgowsta: Eoin, joka tuli sattumalta juuri samalla lennolla käymään kotopuolessa. Kiertelimme yhdessä tehtaan ja päätimme kierroksen panimotornin huipulle, jossa on baari ja todella mahtavat näköalat (torni on itseasiassa yksi Dublinin korkeimpia rakennuksia, ellei jopa korkein, en muista tarkalleen). Harmi vain tytöille tummempi olut ei oikein maistunut.

Sattumista puheen ollen, törmäsimme myöhemmin illasta toiseen ryhmään vaihto-oppilaita, jotka olivat matkanneet Irlantiin Unkarista asti. Hetken juteltuamme päätimme tavata uudestaan pubissa ja istua iltaa yhdessä. Joukossa oli ihmisiä muun muassa Itävallasta ja Sloveniasta. Hauska sattuma oli, että he olivat myös menossa samoina päivinä Galwayhin ja takaisin Dubliniin kuin mekin. Osa heistä oli tulossa käymään myös Glasgowssa (yksi heistä, Geri, tulikin käymään muutamaksi yöksi meidän luonamme).

Lauantaina matkasimme tosiaan bussilla länsirannikolle, Galwayhin. Galway on todella mukava pieni merenrantakaupunki, joka on täynnä kivoja kauppoja, kauniita maisemia ja näkemisen arvoisia paikkoja (muun muassa kuuluisat Claddagh-sormukset ovat kotoisin Galwayn ulkopuolella sijainneesta kylästä). Päivän aikana kiertelimme läpi kaupat ja kävimme virkistäytymässä Atlantin tuulissa merenrannalla. Illasta kävimme syömässä Mc Donagh’s -nimisessä Fish & Chips -ravintolassa, jota yksi matkaopas nimitti jopa kyseisen herkun kodiksi. Tiedä siitä, mutta ruoka oli todella hyvää. Jos etsit joskus hyvää ja suht huokeaa ravintolaa Galwaystä, Mc Donagh’s on hyvä vaihtoehto.Illasta menimme paikalliseen the King’s Head -pubiin istumaan iltaa Dublinissa tapaamiemme vaihtareiden kanssa. Ilta oli kyllä todella hauska, harmi vain juhliminen jäi itselläni vähän vaisummaksi, kun koko matkan vaivannut flunssa pisti yskimään koko illan.

Sunnuntaina palasimme takaisin Dubliniin ja kiertelimme hieman lisää nähtävyyksiä. Kävimme muun muassa Trinity College -yliopistolla, jossa säilytetään kuuluisaa Book of Kells -kirjaa. Tapasimme uudet vaihtarikaverimme uudestaan illasta ja istuimme heidän kanssaan baarissa sulkemisaikaan saakka. Baarien sulkeuduttua otimme taksin lentoasemalle, jossa sitten odottelimme aikaisin aamulla lähtevää lentoamme. Flunssa, kävely ja vähäiset unet veivät aika hyvin mehut, mutta matka kokonaisuudessaan oli kyllä mahtava. Irlantiin pitää kyllä päästä vielä uudelleen, koska todella paljon jäi vielä näkemättä.
